Parents,
I would like to welcome you and your child to the start of Kindergarten at Jenkins Elementary School. My name is Marianne Christian and I will be your child’s teacher for the upcoming school year. I love working with children at this age, and watching them learn and grow. We are going to have a busy and productive year, filled with activities and learning opportunities that are fun, exciting, and also challenging. I can’t wait to get started!
A few facts about me:
This is my twelfth year teaching kindergarten in Scituate. I have two daughters. Callie is almost nine and entering third grade, and Ada is six and entering first grade. They both attend Jenkins School and love it! I enjoy spending time with family, running, and reading books; my favorite children’s authors are Mo Willems and Kevin Henkes.
The following is a list of general information that should help with the beginning of our year:
Backpacks: Children should bring a LARGE backpack every day. It needs to fit projects, lunch bags or boxes, rest blankets, and a weekly library book. Please send in a general two-pocket folder with your child’s name clearly labeled on the front for daily papers or last minute reminders.
Personal Belongings: Please label EVERYTHING (jackets, bags, sweatshirts, hats, etc.) I cannot tell you how many times I have held up a brand new jacket or hat that no one wants to claim!
IMPORTANT ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL INFO:
When you come in for orientation, please be prepared to tell me how your child is getting to and from school every day. If they are riding the bus, please let me know what bus, if possible. The busses drop off and pick up in the Back of the school (First Parish). Car riders are dismissed to the Front of the school (Vinal Ave). So if you are picking your child up by car, you must retrieve them in the car line out front. If you are dismissing early, you may come into the school to sign your child out for the day.
If your child is not going to ride the bus home because someone will be picking him/her up, I MUST receive a note. I also welcome emails. Please remember that if I do NOT reply to the email, then chances are I have not seen it. In this case, it would be best to follow up with a call to the front office. If I do not have a note or email, I must put your child on the bus even if he or she says not to. Every child has to be accounted for and cannot go somewhere without written consent or a phone call to the office beforehand.
Messages: Any notes and book order money should come to school in an envelope addressed to me or to whom the content is for. You can put this note right in your child’s personal folder. I am very good about checking my e-mail all day long. If you prefer to send an email instead of a paper note, that works too! I will always try to respond back if I receive the email in a timely manner.
Scholastic Book Orders: I will be sending home book order forms every other month or so. It is an opportunity for you to purchase some quality books at discounted prices. Participation is voluntary, and no one is obligated to order.
Star of the Week: Each child will have a turn to be Star of the Week. It may not begin until mid- October. Your child will have a chance to bring home a stuffed animal for the weekend. He will tell the class about his adventure in our classroom journal. Also, I will be sending home a poster for you and your child to complete. Your child will have an opportunity to talk about the poster and answer questions from his peers. Your child will bring the stuffy back on Monday. We will hang the poster up for the week. The children look forward to this special week! It affords them the opportunity to share special information about themselves and feel proud and confident.
Rest Time: We have a rest time daily in full day kindergarten. Please send in a blanket that your child may use for the week at school. This will be sent home on Fridays to wash, and then sent back on Mondays to use again for the week. Please make sure it is large enough and not a baby blanket. This item may be separating your child from the floor, and it needs to be big enough for his/her body.
Snack: I WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW IF WE ARE A PEANUT FREE CLASSROOM BY OUR MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 5TH. During snack time, please send in ONE big snack (or two small) and ONE drink. If you know your child tends to get very hungry, pack something that is nutritional and filling because it is a long morning! Things like apples, cheese and crackers, pretzels, or yogurt and granola are some examples. Please send in a refillable water bottle so your child is able to refill it when thirsty.
Lunch: In full day kindergarten, we have lunch in the cafeteria. Your child may bring in his/her lunch or purchase lunch from the cafeteria.
Birthdays: Due to health and wellness policies, we no longer celebrate birthdays with a snack. We will still recognize all birthdays in other ways! The children are offered a crown and get to pick a favorite book to bring in from home to share with the class.
Homework: Homework is not a requirement in kindergarten. I do, on occasion, send home practice pages as homework to strengthen a particular skill we have been learning about in class. Homework sheets are for the child to practice at home, and do NOT have to be sent back in for checking. Many times, I tell the children that they can send the homework back in if they would like a sticker. This is not mandatory.
Health Issues: Please inform me of any allergies, asthma, hearing/sight needs, etc. This will help me accommodate your child and his/her specific needs.
I am looking forward to sharing this year with your child and making it an enjoyable one. I hope to provide each child with a foundation for a life-long love of learning.
